determine what things are similar and which are different?
- For example: all 3 men are writers focused on a cause and the time periods are different.
- What is a unique question that you could ask of that information and then prove in an essay? For example: using the similarities and differences above – Is fighting for a cause part of the human spirit and will it always be?
- Someone could argue that it is and some could argue that it’s not. You could develop a thesis statement based on that question, and say: Fighting for civil rights is engrained in the human spirit, especially through the practice of civil disobedience.
- You would then find three points to persuade your reader that your position is right. Using the thesis above and the material from the graphic organizer, your three points could be:
- The injustice of denying civil rights is wrong and America has been a great offender and defender of these rights. (MLK reference)
- Practicing civil disobedience is effective, even if it takes longer to achieve the goal.(Ghandi)
- Paying the consequences of civil disobedience is worthwhile regardless if you are the oppressed or not. (Thoreau)
