Using quotes in your essay!
First let me say, “You must use them!”
“Why,” you ask?
“Because, how else would you prove a point? Citing a reference bolsters your claim!”
For example, if I want to make the point that Gandhi used logical appeals in his writing, I would want to cite the first sentence in his piece.
When you use quotes, you need to lead into the quote and then follow it up with the reason you chose it. For example (using the Gandhi quote): Gandhi uses a logical appeal when he says, “insert quote.” (Holt, p.__) He points out, using reason, that physical attacks do not solve problems as well as civil protest.
Notice the citation – this is the correct way to cite a textual reference – (publisher, p. page number)
Choose three quotes from Thoreau’s, Civil Disobedience. Lead into the quote and follow it up. Cite it also. I will collect it! Be careful with punctuation! Use the model above as an example.
